Schuelke Law Underscores the Risks of Head-On Car Crashes

A head-on vehicle collision near Carrizo Springs claimed seven lives in June and left two children with life-threatening injuries. 

According to NBC News, one crash occurred about 116 miles southwest of San Antonio. A black Chrysler 300 sedan crossed the center line and hit a 1998 Dodge pickup head-on, then rolled into the ditch and caught fire. All four occupants of the Chrysler vehicle died at the scene. The driver and two passengers in the Dodge pickup also passed away, while two children riding in the pickup were transported to University Hospital in San Antonio. 

Head-On Car Crashes Pose Serious Risks

Head-on car crashes claimed 635 lives in Texas in 2023, according to the Texas Department of Transportation. Overall, 4,283 people died in Texas car accidents in 2023, with 14.3 percent of the deceased losing their lives in head-on collisions. 

What makes a head-on collision so dangerous? Several factors combine to raise the risk of death or catastrophic injury in a head-on crash.

• Vehicle force. When two vehicles strike head-on, the force generated by their mass and momentum is transferred entirely to the occupants of the vehicles. Neither vehicle has an opportunity to reduce the damage of the crash by swerving or traveling in the same path as the other, as in sideswipe or rear-end crashes. Instead, the impact is severe and often deadly.
• Speed. Speeding is a factor in many head-on crashes. TXDOT reveals that in 2023, 341 people died in speeding crashes, including 180 speeding drivers, 86 drivers in a non-speeding vehicle, and 56 vehicle passengers. Increased speed leads to increased force and more severe injuries and damage in a head-on crash. 
• Surprise. Head-on crashes often occur suddenly when a vehicle traveling in its own lane veers into oncoming traffic. With so little time to predict or prepare for a crash, oncoming drivers often have no opportunity to avoid the collision. 

These factors combine to make head-on collisions among the most dangerous and deadly crash types on US roads. 

What Causes Head-On Crashes?

Head-on vehicle crashes are also dangerous because they arise from the same causes that create many other types of accidents. 

Distracted driving can cause a driver to veer across the center line and into oncoming traffic when the driver isn’t paying attention to the road. Driving while drunk or intoxicated by other drugs can result in a head-on crash if the driver cannot control the vehicle appropriately, becomes confused by road markings, or falls asleep behind the wheel. Speeding reduces a driver’s ability to respond to roadway hazards in time to avoid a crash, which may mean the driver swerves into an oncoming lane rather than hit an animal, another car, or something else on the road.
