Why The Fast Track For The Insurance Immunity Act (SB 1628)?

It’s rare that a bill in the Texas legislature is widely panned by the public on both sides of the aisle.

SB 1628, the Insurance Immunity Act, seeks to roll back decades of regulations that help protect consumers from unscrupulous insurance companies.  Because of that, it has been widely criticized.

Consumer advocates are obviously against it, but they’re not the only ones.  Business groups, recognizing the harm that this bill would cause, have jumped on board as well.

James Lites, president and CEO of the Texas Stars Hockey Team, has come out as saying, “We strongly oppose passage of SB 1628.”

Lubbock Mayor Glenn Robertson, certainly not a liberal, has come out strongly against the bill.

A recent poll showed 78% of Republicans want to maintain or increase policyholders’ rights, and 84% of Tea Party members would like the same.

It seems like no one other than insurance companies want the bill.
